Local Demographics - Township Narrative The Township of South Brunswick, (www.twp.south-brunswick.nj.us) in Middlesex County, New Jersey has a comfortable suburban environment, recreational and cultural opportunities, and an outstanding school system (www.sbschools.org). With its country living and easy access to all urban amenities, South Brunswick achieves the best of both worlds. Space is available for growth, which growth has been planned by the Township so as not to jeopardize the natural environment. The Township offers outstanding recreational programs year-round through its Senior Citizen Center (www.twp.south-brunswick.nj.us/Senior.asp?clickOn=3), Youth Center and Community Center. The Community Center is centrally located and contains lighted ball fields, tennis courts and handball courts. The scenic Delaware/Raritan Canal tow path offers opportunities for walking, jogging, hiking, canoeing and nature study. The Township library (www.lmxac.org/sobr/) provides access to approximately 750,000 volumes through its County co-op system and offers movies, senior citizens and youth projects, and special activities to residents. Nearby Princeton and New Brunswick and the universities located there; Princeton (www.princeton.edu/index.shtml) and Rutgers(www.rutgers.edu), provide opportunities for attendance at concerts, theater, ballet and other cultural events. The Township encompasses forty-one and seven tenths (41.7) square miles in the southern part of Middlesex County (www.co.middlesex.nj.us/index.asp). It is strategically located about sixty (60) miles from New York City (home.nyc.gov/portal/index.jsp?pageID=nyc_home), ten (10) miles from Princeton and sixty (60) miles from Philadelphia (www.pcvb.org) in what is referred to as the "Northeast Corridor". The major transportation arteries of the Northeast Corridor traverse the Township. These include the mainline tracks of Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) and New Jersey Transit (www.njtransit.com) the Conrail railway system, the New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 8A), U. S. Route 1, and New Jersey Highways 130 and 27. A well-maintained network of local and county roads interconnects these superb transportation facilities. A major section of County Route 522, a four-lane divided highway, including a new bridge over the Conrail lines, has been completed. Additional projects are planned to provide an east/west connection between Route 1 and Route 130. A five hundred (500) car park and ride facility has been completed on Route 130 which provides commuter parking and direct bus service via Suburban Transit (suburbantransit.com/site.html) and Academy Bus Service (www.academybus.com) to Manhattan via the NJ Turnpike (www.state.nj.us/turnpike) . The Township's Master Plan also envisions a construction of a rail passenger station on the mainline in the Deans-Monmouth Junction area of South Brunswick. Commuter rail stations that serve the Township are nearby at Princeton Junction and Jersey Avenue (North Brunswick). The transportation system provides for rail sidings to serve many industrial sites in the Township, good access to New Jersey's principal seaport of Port Elizabeth/Port Newark (www.panynj.gov/commerce/neframe.HTM) . A freight line, separate from the Conrail tracks, serves the Township along the Turnpike corridor. This links the Township with the port at Perth Amboy to other metropolitan areas. Newark International Airport (www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM) is within thirty (30) minutes of the Township, and LaGuardia, Kennedy International and Philadelphia airports are all within ninety (90) minutes of the Township. |
