Elections of Commissioners

The annual election and budget process operates by the rules and timetable set forth by Title 40A of the New Jersey statutes that govern fire districts.

The Board is currently working on the new budget. Once it is approved, the final copy will be posted in the Financial Section of this web site.

Following is an overview and timeline of the election procedure:

The fire district budget must be circulated and approved not later than 60 days prior to the annual election.

At least 50 days prior to the election, notices to those who request absentee ballots must be published in a newspaper circulated within the fire district.

An initial notice about the election must be published at least six weeks prior to the date of the election.

Candidates for Commission must submit a verified petition to the Secretary of the Commissioners at least 28 days prior to the date of the election.

The fire district budget must be adopted by a majority vote of the Commissioners not later than 25 days prior to the annual election.

At least 10 days before the public hearing, a notice must appear in a local newspaper to announce the time, date and location of the hearing and where to obtain copies of the approved budget.

At the time of the public hearing, which must be held not less than 28 days after approval of the budget, the Commissioners may adopt the budget in final form with appropriate amendments as necessary.

Once the budget is approved, it must be submitted to the Department of Community Affairs for ultimate review and comment.

If the fire district budget is adopted, it is again for-warded to the Department of Community Affairs for final approval and comment.

A subsequent notice of the election must appear not later than one week prior to the fire district election.

The adopted budget must also be published in a newspaper circulating within the fire district at least seven days prior to the annual election.

The annual election is held on the third Saturday in February.
